The survival and well-being of modern societies depends on whether they succeed in developing strategies to cope with wicked problems such as the overexploitation of natural resources, the destruction of the biosphere, mass migration, and expulsion. In an analysis on politics and ethics, Grundmann demonstrates that a resilient society depends on an agonistic model of democracy.

From a practice-oriented perspective, the book illuminates the implications of such a governance system with regard to norms and values of democracy, institutions, and processes of progressive-incremental change.
